In my first blog I introduced the article, "Fox News:
Fair and Balanced? We Report. You
Decide." And that the
article's research concluded that Fox News is biased, and so are most other
news organizations in the United States.
How does this affect politics?
Because news organizations are giving biased information it leads to
citizens only being informed on one side and they are a lot less likely to
agree with the other side. In this
there are less moderate citizens and debates have turned into a winner take all
situation with no type of compromise.
This is has become very evident in recent political issues. During the government shut down neither
side wanted to negotiate. And news
organizations were blaming a specific side for the shut down, but how could it
be one side’s complete fault when neither would negotiate? Neither side would negotiate because
they knew that their voters, who are receiving biased information, would not
want them to.
What
can be done to reverse the bias?
These are just my opinions, but my number one argument is to bring back
the Fairness Doctrine, which regulated news media. The Fairness Doctrine enforced that news organizations
needed to give information from both sides. One issue with media bias is that there are very few news networks;
there are many news shows from national levels to local news but only a few
corporations, who each have their own agenda, own them all. In order to spread the ownership of
news organizations to more people I think that there should be a limit put on
how many news organizations one person can own, and in order to make sure there
is a diverse market for new organizations, that there be affirmative action put
into place.
